The Metro was first published in March 1999 and was only available at first to commuters in London (1). The aim of the free newspaper was to eradicate the numerous awkward tube journeys spent staring at the people sat opposite and actually give commuters something to interact with. There were 85,000 copies made of the first publication released on Tuesday 16 March 1999 but the paper now reaches over a million people everday (2). The Metro is now distributed in cities all over the UK including Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester and many more. It is now the fourth biggest daily newspaper, behind The Sun, the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror (3).
